Abbie texted back. Hi Susannah, and here she did one of those stupid smiley faces. What was she, fourteen? We are just in a conference at the office right now but we are due to break at 9.30 and I’ll mail it right over to you. Have a great day. Another smiley face. Susannah was tempted to send her the aubergine emoji but she just sent back Thanks, no rush.

She wondered if Abbie was showing John the text, were they laughing about it in their conference of two?

It wasn’t proof but it was a hell of a coincidence.

She called John on his cell phone around 11 a.m.

‘How was the morning? Do they even get coffees and pastries in for the boardroom? … Well, that’s something at least. Is everyone in so early? Really, even Elena and Abbie? Wow, they must be paying a tonne in overtime. Is it worth it? Are you at least getting a lot of extra work done? Oh, well that makes it all worthwhile doesn’t it? Anyway, what should we eat for dinner tonight?’ Susannah was furious at how easily John lied. She wanted to confront him but she didn’t want to do it without absolute proof. She didn’t to be that woman. I don’t trust him any more. When did I stop trusting him?

How could he do this to her? After everything they had been through with Louise. Surely the loss of Louise should have brought them closer together. Did he just want to throw it all away? And now she was pregnant again. And he didn’t seem at all happy about the pregnancy. In fact, Adam, her therapist, had had a more enthusiastic response, hugging Susannah when she told him as she had bumped into him at the entrance to his building on her way to a session with him.

But did she really want to be this woman? The one who sets traps for her husband just so he can walk into them? No, but she couldn’t keep going without knowing.
